Weaving Solidarity: Empowering Unique Identifiers for Global Progress

Even within the simplest of discussions, the most basic of conversations, I am reminded again and again that my unique identifiers have molded my perspective in ways that separate me from my peers. Being an Arab hijabi woman born in Iraq has played a significant role in providing me with a unique lens through which I interpret societal issues and experiences.

As a high school student, I often find myself defending my opinions and choices to sneering individuals who choose to look down upon others as opposed to having open conversation. I aspire to never make anyone feel as if their identities are unworthy of respect or recognition. Any opportunity to participate in complex conversations aligns perfectly with my belief that positive change can only be achieved through collaborative efforts that transcend any boundaries.

Faces like my own parents’, carrying stuttering tongues hoping for mercy, are the ones that push me to utilize my experiences to speak up for my people. I was born into a war zone, a place filled with mother’s sobs and street-filled tanks, and I yearn to share first-hand experiences and perspectives of minority communities in the Middle East. These desires also contribute in compelling me to discover the experiences of other communities, in hopes that I may advocate for the rights and equal treatment of individuals from diverse backgrounds.  It is through our own individual unique experiences paired with open communication that I believe we can truly learn, grow, and work towards a more inclusive and understanding society.

When I was younger I often resented the parts of me that screamed different, but I have slowly grown to appreciate what sets me apart. Unique identifiers are invaluable as they offer society a multitude of perspectives and lenses through which to approach social issues. These identifiers, be they cultural, religious, or personal, provide individuals with distinct worldviews. By embracing and sharing these unique identifiers, we unlock a treasure trove of diverse narratives that better our understanding of complex social problems. Each identifier brings forth a unique set of values, histories, and struggles, offering alternative angles through which to examine and tackle societal challenges. This multiplicity of perspectives allows us to address the multifaceted needs of our diverse communities. It is all too common for people to exist surrounded by like-minded individuals, always in comfort and never challenged by new ideas. Ultimately, by embracing unique identifiers and engaging in open conversation regarding pressing issues in our society, we cultivate an environment that harnesses the power of diversity to foster greater progress.

It is imperative, and it is my hope, that all young individuals, regardless of their backgrounds and identifiers, discover that their experiences are worth hearing. Only then can we transcend political divisions, collaborate effectively, and work towards a more inclusive and thriving society. Together, each of us bringing unique experiences to the table, we may make this world a better place.
